Benefits to nature-based treatment
Research from around the world has scientifically documented the physical and psychological benefits of focused, intentional activity in nature:

Lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol and inflammatory agents

Nature Worx Results
The integrative goal is for participants to understand that Nature Worx experiences are a tool that is always easily available. They will understand how, when and why this tool can be valuable. They can access this tool as a different option than using substances to cope with stress, anxiety or depression, and to focus when faced with challenges. Participants will also realize connection—with the natural world, with plants, birds and animals. Participants will learn to focus their attention and use all of their senses to appreciate our world, connect with it, and let it nourish and heal them.
Our program with the renowned Maryland recovery center Ashley Addiction Treatment began in November 2017. Each weekly session is approximately 1.5 hours. Using a pre-and-post course assessment, the following is an outcomes summary:
Of the 71 surveys completed, 67 (94 percent) of the participants reported they agreed or strongly agreed that being outdoors in nature can support their recovery.
Nature Worx has been adopted as an ongoing program at Ashley Addiction Treatment. We are now offering the program to treatment facilities, prevention programs, community organizations, corporate wellness programs, schools and not-for-profit programs on a contractual basis.
